Try 72 dpi and see what happens, then change it back to 96 dpi. There are a couple of other settings that affect the size of things on screen. For instance, under System > Preferences > Theme there are some Large Print themes. The default is Human. Try a couple of these to see what happens. Also check if System > Preferences > Assistive Technology is enabled and in use. It might be zooming everything on screen that way. Some applications ignore all that and go their own way. Firefox usually needs its fonts adjusted via it's own preferences. I also set a higher minimum font size for web sites, as some of them do it all wrong as well. I generally set the resolution to the best native resolution of the monitor, and then adjust the size of screen elements independently. The old hack of changing the resolution to adjust font sizes needs to go away, in my opinion.
