Depending on the laptop's circuitry, when a battery is installed it may
still draw power from the battery, then recharge it in short cycles.
While drawing power from the battery provides a steadier current that's
good for the laptop, it's not good for the battery so you may find that
you get longer battery life when you remove it while you're on AC
(mains) power.
