Stability problems with media files on 14.04

There were packages that I used from Medibuntu, and those were not rolled
into conventional repositories.

I would be happy to dispense with the PPAs if there is a better way to
access packages that I had previously obtained from Medibuntu.
(such as libavcodec-extra, which may be the doy

Specifically, I would like to find the codec package that supports WMV
files that had existed for a decade and is now seemingly gone.

Once upon a time there was a "w64codecs" package that seemed to contain
what I need. Now that's apparently vanished along with Medibuntu.

Anyway, I've disabled all the PPAs, including going from the handbrake PPA
to the included version.

Now WMV files don't open in Handbrake anymore either, so I can't even
convert them to a usable format. Thanks, it's gotten worse.

Any other suggestions?

- Evan
