failed upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04

Well, Mate is not supported by Ubuntu.  It is supported by Mint, and as far as I understand it Mint does not support
upgrades as a policy.  Best of luck.  Perhaps if you can find an appropriate third-party archive you can reinstall the
missing packages over top.
