screen annotation software options

I am now running Linux Mint 14 (Nadia) with Mate. I want screen
annotation capability like I had with Ubuntu and Compiz, but without
the added resource usage of Compiz.  I tried Ardesia, but immediately
hit major problems (Unable to escape pen tool even over the Ardesia
toolbar) and, after process kills and two reboots removed it. What
options are there?
