But that should get done automatically on all but the most obscure
modems; hence my omission.

AFAIK, usb-modeswitch runs fine for that modem, and is also being run
automatically when the modem is connected due to the udev rules
shipping with usb-modeswitch.

However, some modems (and printers) use this behavior and "break" the
switch in some cases if the modem is used on Windows and set in a
specific mode. At that point, the fix is to get back to the provider
software in Windows and changing the mode again.
