unity side bar

I have a laptop and a desktop with ubuntu 12.04 on them.
on the laptop, when I have a lot of open programs, the Icons at the bottom
of the side bar fold up, but on the desk to they don't fold up, the just go
off the bottom of the screen, and you have to scroll down to see them.

Is there a way to alter this behaviour?
