>From what I can discern by scanning the result of a search from "Mr. Google", there is a key sequence to accomplish this but I can't verify it myself at this moment.
<super><shift><number>
<super> = Windows key on a PC keyboard, on a Mac I assume it would be the <cmd> key?<shift> = a shift key<number> = When you press the <super> key, each of the items in the Unity bar is overlayed with a unique number. Press the one corresponding to the app you want to open a new instance of.

Can someone verify this please?

it with your middle mouse button, or in most cases these days the mouse
wheel.

Try that with a single trackpack(i.e. on mac laptops)

Well I upgraded a pc that I don't really use to 11.04, and still don't like it. It fixes some of the issues that I had with it during beta(no tty, can't open 2nd instance of application with icon) but it seems you have to go through the search functions to find the application you want instead of Applications->Video->smplayer for example becomes : Applictions-> Type "smpl.."
