startup troubles with ubuntu 9.10

You can try a lighter weight version like Xbuntu.. With that being said,
Karmic was when they really went over the top with the bloat and future
versions aren't much (if any) worse, so if you're ok with Karmic, you should
be OK with Lucid or Maverick. I want my Jaunty back, but with suspend and
built-in mic (fixed in Karmic) ;)
