startup troubles with ubuntu 9.10

Mount of filesystem failed.
A maintenance shell will now be started.
CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and retry.

After restarting my machine I can't seem to get past this in the boot
screen.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
