ctrl key not working

Sorry, haven't really been following this thread, so maybe this has been 
suggested/tried already.

Possibly you have "sticky keys" enabled in your accessibility options? 
Haven't used Gnome in over 10 years, so couldn't tell you where to find 
the setting, but in KDE System Settings -> Accessibility -> Modifier 
Keys Tab.
