Alternatively, Ubuntu Waterloo regular Stephen Paul Weber has a
greasemonkey script that shunts YouTube (and other popular video
sites) videos over to VLC:

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/34765

Of course then you need Greasemonkey. Which probably means you need
JavaScript enabled in some form.  (I use NoScript and whitelist stuff
like YouTube, personally...  But then I also have no particular moral
quandaries around running Flash.)
