Tony is absolutely bang on the money - your ability to communicate
complex stuff in very simple terms will serve you incredibly well in
your career, more likely than your ability with any programming language
(depending on your boss of course).

I see you note Nagios - I'm not particularly a fan.... in a similar
vein, take a look at Zenoss, we run that at work to monitor all of our
infrastructure - I love it.

I am a linux enthusiast, working in a Windows dominated workplace -
although I do have a couple of *nix boxes running samba and various bits.
