Thank you ! The page link and subsequent running of the 10.04 command [after editing ] worked out.

I have an HP j4580 all in one printer and scanner,  I followed the instructions on the HP site (http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html), and I had no problems getting either the printer or the scanner working.
I actually ended up doing it twice.  I had installed it when I had 10.04 installed, then I did a fresh install of 10.10 and did it all over again.  I did have similar problems resolving dependences but I don't recall much of an issue doing it.  The installer sucks in that once you resolve one dependency you don't know of any other ones until you try the installer again.  You just have to repeat resolving the dependency then try the installer again and resolve the next one.  For each dependency do a Google search to find out what the hell it is then install everything if you have to, to resolve it.

This page (http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/ubuntu.html) shows how to install the dependencies but for 10.04.

I now have my HP C4599 all in one printer printing using the default hplip 3.10.6 package but no amount of utilities installed or libraries will see the scanner. Previously when running the install package on 9.04 and 10.04 all features worked including the scanner.

Suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated. The latest hplip 3.10.9 if I could get it to run would probably solve it but I can't resolve the last dependency although the required python libraries are installed.
