Brent, I do all that but it always returns to File system. There is no Apply so I close preferences and when I return, it is still in File system. Ray

Generally,

Hotmail is not an email client for you in particular but for the entire
membership of Hotmail.com. As such there are, most likely, restrictions
placed on how attachments are handled. In the Microsoft world email
attachments are a huge security risk. Perhaps hotmail has enabled some
global restrictions tht only allow for a download of these attachments
so that the integrity of hotmail is not compromised.

An email client for you would be Thunderbird or Eudora, both of which
are available through the Synaptic Package Manager. You can configure
either to pick up your Hotmail messages and get direct management of
attachments.

BTW, changing the download location is as easy as clicking on the words
'file system' as they appear in the edit/pref/general tab. This should
open a menu and let you choose from what is available. In my case the
choices are ... file system; desktop; and then a list of the multiple
partitions as mounted by the OS. Just click on desktop and apply the
change by either clicking on 'apply' if shown or by closing the
preferences window.

Alright in Edit, preferences, the downloads are in " File
System" and I cant seem to change that to Desktop, no matter, I have
found them in tmp. At least I now where they are. There they are already
opened. Still why are they not opened from the email program? Thanks a
lot for the help Brent. Ray

In Epiphany it is under Edit/Preferences under the General tab. After
downloading and installing it I see the default download location is to
the Desktop. Any PDF you have downloaded is now on your desktop. Right
click on the file and choose Properties. Find the Open tab and then
specify the program you want to use to open PDF files with. That should
do it.

OK, that and your other explanation helps a bit.

You are using a web based or "webmail" application so of course you get
and read your mail through a browser. I don't use these so I cannot
help with it use.

However after you have downloaded the PDF, can you find it? If not open
the download window from within Epiphany (tools/download) and check to
see where it is being saved. Once you locate it, right click on it to
choose Properties. Then choose the Open with tab to select which
program you would like to associate with PDF files. From then on in the
OS will open PDFs with that program.

While in the email program?

Epiphany is a browser so clicking on a PDF will save the file, hence
the download window, unless you associate another action with that file
type. Once a file is downloaded right click to get the menu. Choose
Properties and then go to the Open tab to select Open Office, Evince or
Acrobat to associate with this type of file. Once the OS know how to
deal with that file it should open them directly without the download.

You wrote originally..." i am
using
Ubuntu
9.04 with Epiphany and cant read PDF from emails" and, as I understand
it, this is confusing as emails do not have anything to do with your
browser.
