video player problems

I have a desktop system (refurb Dell Optiplex) with Jaunty installed.
There is NO internet connection at that location until some time later
next week. I tried installing VLC and mplayer from packages copied
over from my netbook using apt, but was unable to get that working. I
managed to get VLC and Mplayer installed, and running, but both crash
when I actually attempt to play anything. Reinstalling some of the
packages did not help either.

I'm thinking that this is related to one of the packages that I
installed, or the video card, as I can't seem to enable any visual
effects either. Any ideas? Any ideas why running apt to install debs
from a directory doesn't work?
