no cd on startup

Tom, Check your /etc/fstab entries for the CD/DVD drives.

It should look something like this
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

if any error here the CDs will try to mount and will hang until a timeout.
