During the install, when GParted starts up, there is a "manual" radio button, select that and goto the next screen.  A window is then shown that contains all of the existing partitions that it found.  Choose the one you want to reformat and edit it.  From within that dialog is the option to reformat it using the ext4 file system.  Make sure the "format" checkbox is checked.
