Sorry guys if I've missed something along the way as I haven't been following this thread too closely, but I experienced something similar awhile ago.
While in Firefox I would occassionaly not be able to play any YouTube type of movie. I discovered, while poking around that I had more than one version of Flash, or rather I had more than one "add on" installed that played Flash.
I went to the Tools menu, clicked on Add ons, then chose the Plugins tab. Displayed are all of the addons currently active in FF. Look for duplicate plugins but with different versions and look for more than one plugin that indicates that it plays Flash and disable them. Of course leave one active and see if that works for you.
