Hi everyone, it's Ray again, thank you David,Glen,Chris and Mac for all the great info you took the time to send me. Glen, the W32codecs are installed.Chris, I am using your suggested settings.David, I installed the Meta package and Mac, I checked the Ubuntu forum and I have the right packages.I have java-common 0.30ubuntu3 and flash player installed. Here is the situation; I am using a new Dell Vostro computer with Vista installed and I installed Ubuntu 8.1 along side it (to get used to linux). In Ubuntu I get Google videos OK but the screen intensity lowers and all freezes when I try to get youtube videos. When I am in Vista all types of video are displayed correctly. I dont know what is going on.I really appreciate all your help and I like linux and will probably get rid of Vista if I can resolve this problem. I am not a programmer and cant figure this out alone. Thank you.

Re: Video Clips.
Haven't posted here in a while, but in regards to video clips and
stuff, make sure that you have installed from Medibuntu the
non-free-codecs, w32codecs package. This one gives you all the
"windows" codecs commonly used.
Also, if you install gstreamer, it will typically give you a list of
stuff to install as well. Other packages you may want to look at are
mplayer, VLC (really good media player) and my current favourite
(because it handles fast forwarding and rewinding of videos better than
VLC) Miro Internet TV application.
Trying to view youtube videos on an internet browser requires both Java
and Flash. I know that the sun java 1.6.0_10 works to view them and
you want to have sun-java6-bin, sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-plugin
installed. You would be looking for flashplugin-nonfree and
flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound.
One thing to about firefox is that if you have (AFAIK must installs)
NoScript and Adblock Plus addons installed, they may be blocking
youtube scripts that allow
To answer the question about the screen greying out and freezing. This
is what happens in Ubuntu (from my experience) when a process begins to
take up alot of resources and your load level tends to go thru the
roof. this is your system is trying to compensate for that extra load.
Regards,
Glen Merrick

Hi David, First let me thank you for taking the time to answer my query. I
am using Firefox as browser, When I check for drivers I get "no proprietary
drivers are in use on this system". As for the restricted-extras I dont know
which ones are required. Thank you.

Here is the solution I used that seems to work:
>From the "Main Menu" choose [System] > [Administration] > [Software Sources]
Under the Ubuntu tab checked all boxes with the exception of "Source Codes"
That should allow access to restricted applications. There may , however, be
another "switch" somewhere that I have forgotten about but that is a start.
Perhaps someone else will add to this.

I used to have problems with "freezing video clips from YouTube" until I
started using EPIPHANY browser. With that browser I never had any trouble
with YouTube.

Hi Andy, I downloaded from the repositories as you suggested from Medibuntu and I still cant view videos. Also I checked the boxes in Software sources as Mac suggested, with no luck. When I go to the Hardware drivers in System I still get: No proprietary drivers are in use on this system.. There is something I am not doing right, but I sure dont know what??
