Another thought just occured...This one had worked for a while, and has
worked for others.

I can't remember the specific switch any more, but in Volume Control /
Preferences, theres a bunch of switches in there that you can
activate/deactivate.  Some of those had positive effects (theres an
"auxiliary (something) jack" one that comes to mind; IIRC it was to either
enable/disable either an extra analog or digital output).  Not at that
computer right now, but if I get a chance later, I'll stick the card back in
and find that option.
