8.04 sound problems

Holy Cow! I posted an "Ubuntu Farewell" about 4 hours ago and since then 
have been swamped with offers of help. I want very much to stay with 
Ubuntu (or now a flavour of Ubuntu called Linux Mint). I will now try to 
recall all the details of my efforts during the past 5 months to solve 
the  sound problem and post them on this site.  Thank you all!  George
