I think it might also have to do with the fact that it's an all-in-one printer. I have a Lexmark at home that I was never able to make the scanner part work. Now my simple canon standalone scanner worked at first attempt (since 6.08), and still works. All I ever had to do was plug it in.

I used Hardy, now using Intrepid, I have an HP 5610 all in one scanner
printer
I have it working, but making scanners work in Linux is not easy.
It took me some research and trying, but it does work.
I don't know if there is a true out of the box scanner that works.
It took less work in intrepid then in hardy, so I have to assume that
they improved the drivers.
