Well you also have to keep in mind that they can't teach everyone
everything. The tut's on Howtoforge are designed to get someone who
knows how the mechanisms work (IE DNS, web servers in general, etc)
however aren't familiar with where to find the tools to accomplish their
goals in a particular OS, basically they show you how to do things not
teach you why. So depending on your level of n00bness they can be
terrific resources.

So are you talking then of a user/pass combo to access a web site
(HTTP)? Or FTP access for your users? Or giving them shell accounts?
What method are you allowing your friends and family to access this info?
PS I would stop specifically referencing record companies on this list,
you are basically asking a volunteer to help you break the law and
putting it on public record. We don't need to know specifically what
you are serving. The technology is the same regardless of whether you
are serving home videos of your livestock as it is if you are pirating
and distributing Hollywood movies. So lets say for the sake of
simplicity that you plan to serve some videos of your livestock. What
you do with it once you know how is your business. :)
Also let's keep this discussion on the list and not private. Others can
benefit from your n00bness... :)
