Reinstalled Hardy

After all the attempts to recoup X11 and the GUI for my Ubuntu 8.04
install, finally dumped the dual boot -repartitioned, and installed
Hady from scratch.
After the angst, all went fairly easily, and to my surprise, I even
had the auudio in and audio out working (that was the sole
raison-d'etre for keeing the XP partition). I tested it using Skype
and the Skype audio test (I heard the sounds on the speaker, and heard
my voice back confirming that audio output worked properly).
Well that only lasted for a couple of hours. A couple of reboots, and
updates, and the audio indicator on the bar had a red cross beside it,
indicating it was no longer functioning.
I did some tests and gathered info...
I have a SB Live! card - and I know that support for it under Ubuntu is iffy.

Any ideas of why audio input and output worked at the outset, and now does not?
Any recommendations as to how I can (if possible) get it to function again?
