Importing photos

Hi Everyone,
I had photos saved on cd and F-Spot was able to import from it.I downloaded other photos into Home pictures and F-Spot would not import from pictures.
  I then tried Picasa,and had the same results.Am I missing something?Do they need a plugin or something? It's frustrating me.
 Any help would be appreciated.
