If you do decide to go with the external drive, check out this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=308027

I just installed it on a neat 120g WD passport USB HD. It costed me around $109.00 on Costco here in Ontario.

Hi:

You need the 64bit flavour of Ubuntu. Get a second Hard drive. Install
it to that.

One of those External Usb Drives perhaps. Un plug your Windows Drive.
Then boot up with Ubuntu. The ATI might need the Drivers for it, to
work. Just keep it simple! Dual Boot, and it's difficult. One hard
drive. This makes it simple!
