Viruses exploit software issues, not hardware ones (although
exploiting a hardware bug is possible, merely very hard and thus not a
very attractive target). In addition, the fragmentation of Linux makes
it a very unattractive target for virus writers. Remember, they are
aiming for massive impact. In the end, there have been a few proof of
concept viruses and at least one in the wild more than 10 years ago,
but nothing like the current Windows crop.
