Feisty screen resolution problem

Wolf: Still having problems, and I think I've confused /etc/X11/xorg because

*******
a) I get this msg: xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriting
possibly-customised configuration file; backup in ....
**********
I carried on and entered startx and a new authority file was created, then
the nest message is
*******************
b) X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting.
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
*******
The first time I tried your fix I got hung up on one screen that wouldn't
move, so I exited and tried again. The second time I realized I needed to
use the esc key (when ok didn't work) and carried on but was aborted with
the same message as in b) above.

Any ideas? Do I need to reinstall Ubuntu 7.04 to start over fresh? I
frequently receive the message telling me I'm not authorized to do
something; what should I do about that?
Ciao
Rachael
