Weytk Xexweytep/Hello everyone,
I've been using Linux for the past year ever since I bought my first
computer in 10 years. I used computers a lot in High School and even
installed Debian(downloading a CD on dial-up sucks).
I'm a Secwepemc from Kamloops, BC. Recently I've been thinking I'd
like to start translating Ubuntu into Secwepemctsin my language. I
signed up for the gnome-i8n and rosetta mailing lists.
I thought I'd sign up here to see if anyone knew of anything else like
this has been started elsewhere in Canada for the other Indigenous
languages. I saw on Rosetta that there was a spot for Inuktitut, but
there were no members.

I'm one of the folks who originally pushed this, and I've promoted the idea
to a some organizations, but have been too busy hunting contracts to finish
the articles I wanted to write for the aboriginal media. I'll be getting to
this over the next month or so, using some contacts that I have. I'll also
be approaching a native science / technology organization, with whom I have
had some direct contact.
I'm trying to use indigenous artwork, etc. as a wedge to introduce free
software alternatives (GIMP, OOo, etc.) on any platform, preparing the way
for Ubuntu, etc. later on, but will happily coordinate with fellow Tux
users.
Back to the chase...
Ralph
