I don't know anything about using iPods... There's lots of good stuff
on the Ubuntu Wikis (http://wiki.ubuntu.com).  A quick search reveals:

If you'd like to use banshee, why not just install it with Synaptic?
I would recommend always searching Synaptic before downloading
packages from the Internet.
