Which Printer, scanner are you trying to install? I just finished installing
the F330 all in one from HP and I actually have everything working in Gnome
and KDE. It probably isn't too difficult with Xubuntu.

You should checkout http://www.freestandards.org/en/OpenPrinting
and look over the database for your printer
