Yes. It was a fresh install from the Edgy CD, with all of the updates 
applied. During the installation I had a huge amount of space available, 
so I designated 80GB to a Linux partition using Gpart.

It's ok, I am content to look at Maurice's suggestion, and the ones 
Jamon suggested as well. I have had to reinstall Edgy twice since, as I 
am experimenting and destroying things as I go. No data loss as I keep 
very good back-ups.
