X resolution difficulties (Re: TWO RESTARTS TO MOUNT REMOVABLE DRIVES)

Good morning Peter,

I'm beginning to think that my resolution problems may be due to
something entirely different to the xorg.conf configuration difficulty,
which could be a by product of a deeper problem.

When I boot up from the Live CD, I get two Gnome setting daemon error
messages, both giving the same message. They eventually go away after
the Ubuntu splash screen. But, if I recall correctly, the installation
progress window and bar were in blue/white windows colours, not the
regular human ubuntu colours. Somehow or other, all the human colours
did eventually reappear the way they should. Another mystery?!!

I'm also having a problem with Skype, which I'm trying to resolve with
the Skype people. The usual Skype "online" icon is not displayed in the
task bar next to the volume control icon where it should be and, if I
shut down Skype using the "X" Close Window icon, Skype continues to run,
causing a database error the next time I start Skype. This can only be
corrected by doing a full reboot.

My suspicions are further heightened because when, after entering my
username and password for a regular start up, there is a very brief
white flash in the location where the Gnome settings daemon error
messages were before. i.e. just before the splash screen. This white
"flash" is so fast, I had not really noticed it earlier.

So, to summarize, I think I need to solve this Gnome setting daemon
error problem before coming to any hard conclusion about how to solve
the screen resolution problem. Any ideas how to do this?

Maurice

PS What do all those acronyms stand for -- remember, I'm a young 82 year
old, not used to all this modern jargon! :-)
