With linux, case/CASE matters :-0

You need
  $PATH
not
  $path

Secondly, it may be easier for you to re-create your
 /etc/apt/sources.list
file (as suggested by a previous post), rather than actually edit the
 file,
and fix the error on whatever line # was specified.
