Hi Laurie!

Apparently you file /etc/apt/sources.list have something wrong.

You can try creating a source file here:
http://www.ubuntu-nl.org/source-o-matic/
and then copy the content to /etc/apt/sources.list by editing the file:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and copying the generated content of source-o-matic there

Or configure it using System > Administration > Synaptic Packages Manager
Then go to Configure > Repositories

Try unchecking everything and hitting OK/APPLY and then checking everything
and hitting OK/APPLY

Hope to help!

Bye
