I'm afraid I had a similar logo idea - maple leaf inside Ubuntu circle -
veto'd by Canonical's trademark person a few months ago.

If you read the policy carefully, you can apply the Ubuntu logo to things,
but you can't apply things to the Ubuntu logo.

This would also prevent us from replacing the small circles of the logo with
maple leaves, as someone else has suggested.

Ku/Edu/Xu/buntu are exceptions, because they're official Ubuntu/Canonical
projects. Locoteams and others who want to modify the logo are far more
restricted.

The Australian Team recently picked a logo, and several of the ideas
presented there were also ineligable because of the trademark policy, but
their final choice was a very cool, distinctive logo with a strong Ubuntu
flavour (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/Logo).

The trademark policy makes it more of a challenge to come up with good
locoteam logos, but Canonical obviously want to prevent dilution of it's
trademark, and they're not alone in restricting what can be done with their
marks - the Gnome Project & Debian have similar policies. Anyway, it's a fun
challenge!
