There is plenty of pie to go around for everyone:
http://www.canonical.com/support
Who benefits the most? Which company's main business is Ubuntu?
Canonical. Ubuntu is great, don't get me wrong, but to conveniently
forget that the whole distro is a business venture first and foremost is
a little shortsighted. My point is that we are a part of the business,
doing work for someone for free. No value judgement there, that's just
how it is, and we benefit too, by having a superb distro to use for
free, and by providing local support, paid or otherwise. But again, even
if Canonical isn't making money for now, they are trying to... we're
part of the equation.

Exactly... That's the whole point of using the community to promote
Ubuntu. It's called free advertising. You scratch my back and give me a
free distro, I get involved, tell my friends, get the name out there,
maybe some suits hear about it, buy a support contract or two, I've just
scratched your back. It's a win win, and it never has to be about
Canonical which works for everyone involved.
