You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: nautilus

To reproduce, open computer:/// window and you should see your DVD
drive there. Right click on the empty drive and you'll see some context
menu options. Now insert a DVD and wait till the name under the icon
changes. Right click and note that the context menu is the same. Hit
refresh on the window and then right click again. You'll note that
"Copy DVD ..." has now appeared. You have to manually refresh to get
that menu item to happen.

Choose "Copy Disc". It doesn't remember your last selection for
destination. As an example I don't remember the last time I chose "New
disc in the burner holding the source disc" but that is always the
default. Choose "Image File".

Image File always defaults to "$HOME/brasero.iso". This is a silly
default. At the very least it should use the disc label as the iso
name.

Secondly I have never written the iso file to my home directory, always
somewhere else. Hit "properties" to change location. Navigate to a
different directory in the file dialog that appears. Note how the name
at the top is "brasero.iso" with brasero highlighted. Start typing a
new name. Instead of it replacing the highlighted "brasero", a text
entry filter field appears at the bottom right. Click however many
times it takes in the name field so you can actually enter the name you
want. Note that the button in the bottom right is labelled "Close" when
it should really be "Accept" or something similar. Click it.

Now hit "Create Image".

Note how you get a box popping up doing a Knight Rider impression and
then telling you it is safe to remove the disc. It isn't safe since the
copy hasn't begun yet. In fact the very last thing you should is remove
the disc. Additionally behind the scenes this popup is actually doing a
sync operation and then unmounting the DVD. Note that it syncs *all*
drives. If for example you happen to be doing a copy between two
unrelated drives in another window then the sync will eventually timeout
and you'll be told the copy has failed. It hasn't even started to copy
and the sync is unnecessary.

The copy process then starts and works as expected. An "estimated drive
speed" label is displayed but no value for it.

When complete it has a "success" label on the left, and then says how many bytes were copied on the right. The number of bytes is modulo 4GB (ie the lower 32 bits of the actual number of bytes). Additionally it is displayed in bytes not MiB like the interface was showing during the copying. For example with the disc I just tried the copying process said the disc was
7644 MiB and the success says that 3720644608 bytes were copied.

It would also be nice if the dialog had an eject button. I just made a
successful copy the disc so the original is unlikely to be of further
use.

Some discs have bad sectors (stupid Sony usage preventation schemes).
If you are copying a disc and bad sectors are encountered then the error
message shown is "Data could not be written (Input/output error)". This
is very misleading as the writing is not a problem - it is the reading
that is the problem. The log shows this:

BraseroDvdcss called brasero_job_error
BraseroDvdcss finished with an error
BraseroDvdcss asked to stop because of an error
        error           = 1
message = "Data could not be written (Input/output error)"
BraseroDvdcss stopping
Session error : Data could not be written (Input/output error) (brasero_burn_record brasero-burn.c:2839)
