pixel_juice, you could use the "Startup Disk Creator" to create a usable
LiveCD version of Lucid on a USB stick.  In addition to at least 700MB
for the image, you can allocate additional space that can be used by the
LiveCD to write data to.  In this way, you can boot Lucid from a USB
stick and "Try Ubuntu without installing" and yet you can still
"install" packages and drivers that will be there for the next boot.
