The good or bad (?) news is: I cannot reproduce this bug anymore.
Since f-spot is still on 0.7.1, there must have been an update in X - is that possible?
Otherwise, I can only imagine this bug to be caused by a theme. I changed the theme since - as I change themes pretty often, being interested in ubuntu-art - and I don't remember which theme I was using when I got this bug. (And the many times I reproduced it, over a period of several weeks.)

I am now using Kin out of kwwii's community themes (in kwwii's PPA), but
I also tried to reproduce the bug with Human, Human-Clearlooks, Human-
Murrine, Elegant Brit and NewHuman. I could not reproduce the crash with
any of those themes.
