Unfortunately after an upgrade to 8.10. The problem is still there for
me. I can see blank DVD's, play CD's but pre recorded DVD's still not
being recognised

lshw -C disk gives -
With pre recorded DVD:

did the all_generic_ide=1 in grub as well as well
