Will somebody at PLEASE fix this problem. I have several PCs and Laptops that continue to
exhibit this issue and they also refuse to read any data or movie DVDs. The drives are combo cdrw dvdrw drives and will only read burned CDs. This is a CRITICAL issue and all the PCs worked perfectly fine in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) Why are we having this problem now with hardware that used to work suddenly does not and no one seems to realize how *CRITICAL* this is. This is a MAJOR bug and its a problem with the KERNEL failure to read DVDs and blank media.
To summarize :
Many DVDrw drives will only read CDROMs
They will not read data or movie DVDs nor any blank media.
This problem is at the kernel level
These devices worked without problems in gutsy.

$ sudo mount -t udf /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0
mount: No medium found

this problem manifest as several different bug reports with a plethora of different
suggestions to try such as

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-volume-manager/+bug/218834

Try to recheck if you did boot with the all_generic_ide=1
Other workarounds could be:
1. Booting with irqpoll.
2. Trying to use the 2.6.24-12 kernel.
3. Someone said that he got a better umda cable and now his drive speed was properly seen as udma2.
=======================================================

I hate to be harsh here but it has been 2 months since Hardy was
released with a bug that should have never been released and yet this is
not fixed. With ever release of ubuntu there are massive show stopping
bugs that really turn people off.
