Hi.
I have the same issue.To get a distro iso burned on dvd or cd i have to waste mani discs to get one working.
It happens with ide and sata drives ,I tried differents brands of dvd and cds and always verify the md5 sum before burning.
Nero on win works ok

 Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy)
2.6.24-19-generic 
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
