This appears to have been a media issue. I have now gone through with
dvd+rw-mediainfo to check the media speed, as well as having the drive
speed. Some of my supposed-to-be-faster media reports a alower speed,
as viewable with dvd+rw-mediainfo.
I am currently burning with media that reports the following:
$ dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/dvd
INQUIRY: [MATSHITA][DVD-RAM UJ-852 ][RB02]
GET [CURRENT] CONFIGURATION:
Mounted Media: 1Ah, DVD+RW
Current Write Speed: 4.0x1385=5540KB/s
Write Speed #0: 4.0x1385=5540KB/s
Write Speed #1: 2.4x1385=3324KB/s
and Brasero is burning at the 4x speed, after starting at 2.4x.
So please mark this as invalid, although I'll make a feature suggestion
that Brasero should report the media speed, since it appears to using it
to determine burn rate.
For example, for my RiDATA 4x media (printed right on the disc, itself),
dvd+rw-mediainfo reports:
GET [CURRENT] CONFIGURATION:
Mounted Media: 1Ah, DVD+RW
Media ID: RITEK/004
Current Write Speed: 2.4x1385=3324KB/s
Write Speed #0: 2.4x1385=3324KB/s
Speed Descriptor#0: 00/2295103 R at 2.4x1385=3324KB/s W at 2.4x1385=3324KB/s
So basically RiDATA lied right on the disc.
