The same problem for me.
If I set the DMA param to "off" with hdparm, I'm able to record DVDs but not at the maximun speed.

My HW is:
CPU: AMD64 3200+
Board: MSI KT8Neo2
DVD: LG 4X.

OS: Kubuntu Feisty.
Kernel: 2.6.20-16-generic
