i get the same error in /var/log/messages

Jul 21 00:37:23 rossak kernel: [  488.580000] hdc: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
Jul 21 00:37:23 rossak kernel: [ 488.580000] ide: failed opcode was: unknown

for the sake of conserving space...i did not include the rest of the
lines similar to these 2 ( there are 30 MB worth of error messages lithe
this ).

I haven't tried gutsy as the laptop i'm working from is for work related
activities...but this is really anoying ...as i cant user the CD/DVD
drive in this thing.

If you want to kill the process using your writer you might want to
issue the comand:

hdparm -w /dev/hdc

to do an ATAPI reset on the drive...and after that try to kill k3b
