I was Using edgy but am now using feisty the problem remains.

I run 32 and 64 bit and they both have the issue.

Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold

dpkg -l output.

ps in future it might be wise to add 'sudo' to any commands that need
it, I realised but new users might not.  It could become frustrating.
