Additionally, the following people won a gift for their special contribution: * Javier López (chilicuil), for being so supportive and being the only participant in the previous round of the Bug Week, helping setting priority to 28 bugs. * Ross Gammon (retail-0), for being the one with the greatest contribution to the bug confirmation; not only in quantity but also in quality. * Walter Garcia-Fontes (walter-garcia), for being so close to being managed as many bugs as Ross Gammon; (although I see it has been not from the provided list and mainly not concerning the "Trusty" release, which is the one which can take more time to confirm 8-D ). Please email me telling what courtesy you want to receive and where. And, since this is not about how much we can't do but actually what we can do and feels good to us, the rest of help is also appreciated. Thank you. Thanks Alberto for organizing this, on the courtesy to me don't worry, if you want you can send it to our Loco team and we can include it in the lottery that we run after each release party among the participants (send it to the team coordinator, you can find addresses at http://loco.ubuntu.com/teams/ubuntu.cat/). Now, some (constructive, hopefully) comments: 1) In the part of "confirming" bugs, first I think we discussed some months ago that confirming bugs is not the most important part of managing bugs, as there are a lot of confirmed bugs that where confirmed just because two users saw it. The most important part is, in my opinion, checking if the reporter can provide more information, and seeing if it can be triaged. Second I find it almost impossible to deal with bugs if I don't concentrate in specific packages, issues, and so on. Otherwise each bug is so different from the next that I never get on speed on dealing with them. 2) On the part of paper cuts, I find that the list was not very useful. None of those bugs were, in my humble opinion, really "bitesize". some of them wouldn't make sense to handle as an Ubuntu package as they where of an upstream nature, and so on. But again, thanks for the effort. Last comment is that I think, and this is something that we discussed also lot of times, old bugs shouldn't be ignored, and some effort should be dedicated to clean those old bugs. This is one of the easiest task for new bug triagers, but not a nice thing to do, users who get the first answer after several months of an unattended bug can dedicate you really nice insults, especially if they have moved away from Ubuntu long ago. But better late than never. -- Walter Garcia-Fontes From noreply at ubuntu.com Mon Mar 10 11:35:25 2014 From: noreply at ubuntu.com (Ubuntu Wiki) Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2014 11:35:25 -0000 Subject: =?utf-8?q?New_attachment_added_to_page_DebuggingProgramCrash_on_Ubuntu_Wi?= =?utf-8?q?ki?= Message-ID: <20140310113525.18508.59975@mangaba.canonical.com> Dear Wiki user, You have subscribed to a wiki page "DebuggingProgramCrash" for change notification. The "Debug Symbol Packages" page has been changed by staticd-growthecommons: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debug%20Symbol%20Packages Comment: create page New page: <> ||<>|| This document describes how to set up the debugging symbol packages ( *-dbg.deb and *-.dbgsym.ddeb ). You might need to do this when you are performing tasks like a Backtrace or using Valgrind. == Debug Symbol Packages == If you want to debug a crash in a project you are developing yourself or from a third-party package, or need the debug symbols for particular libraries very often, it is helpful to install those permanently into your system. Debugging a program or analyzing stack traces can be very hard because most of the information that can be extracted from them will be in the form of offsets into the binary machine code of the executable. The extra information that allows mapping a machine instruction in a complex module to a function and line number in a corresponding C file is stored in the debug symbol packages. The maintainers of a project usually place the {} packages alongside their binary package in the same repository. Installing them will just involve finding the appropriate package name based on the version of that is installed. However, not all maintainers do this and they may not be up to date. During compilation on the ubuntu servers debug packages are also created automatically for each binary package. These are named {} and are stored in a separate archive. This is because these packages are used relatively rarely compared to the main repositories and need not be mirrored as much. (the spec for this) Either one of these can be used. First, check if there is a package with a -dbg suffix in the main Ubuntu repositories. These are the debug symbol packages, and are equivalent to '-dbgsym' described below. You can safely use either one, but not both at once. Try installing the package, adding -dbg to its name, for example: {} if the package in question is the xserver-xorg-core package. If there is no -dbg package: 1. Create an `/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ddebs.list` by running the following line at a terminal: {} 1. Stable releases (not alphas and betas) require three more lines adding to the same file, which is done by the following terminal command: {} You may also add these lines using the Synaptic Package Manager: * Choose Synaptic via the System > Administration menu. * Choose Software Sources or Repositories via the Settings menu, and click on the Third-Party Software tab. * Click the Add button and enter each deb ... line as above one by one and click the Add Source button (you will have to add these lines one at a time). 1. Import the debug symbol archive signing key: {} 1. Then run {sudo apt-get update } to update your package list or click the Reload button if you used the Synaptic Package Manager. 1. The debug symbol packages have the '-dbgsym' suffix attached, so to install the debug symbols for the package 'yelp', you first run: {apt-cache policy yelp } This will show you the version number currently installed (we'll use 2.22.1-0ubuntu2.8.04.1 in this example). NOTE: 'yelp' [which is the package name of "Help and Support" located under the 'System' menu] is just an example and not a part of the command: 'yelp' is only used to demonstrate the procedure. You must replace 'yelp' with the name of the package you want to debug. 1. Install the debug symbols: {} You can also use the Synaptic Package Manager to search for 'yelp-dbgsym' and install it from there. The above procedure will install the debug symbol package for yelp only. Chances are that yelp uses shared libraries in other packages and debug symbols for them might be required in order to obtain a readable stack trace or perform other debugging tasks. You can download the following shell script (list-symbols-packages-v2.1.sh) to resolve all the dependencies. Attaching a debugger to an already running process may require elevated privileges even if you own the process. The following invocation will print out the list of files to install. {} To automatically install them apt can be called with the input from the script. The script is invoked with {} for a terse output without the descriptions of the packages and error messages are suppressed. {} /!\ Version 2 of this script makes it compatible with the newer GDB (which no longer loads all libraries at startup by default). -v2 currently only works if you run it against a currently-executing binary (i.e., with '-p $(pidof '). The older version of the script is also available. ---- CategoryBugSquad CategoryDebugging From noreply at ubuntu.com Mon Mar 10 14:47:17 2014 From: noreply at ubuntu.com (Ubuntu Wiki) Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2014 14:47:17 -0000 Subject: =?utf-8?q?=5BUbuntu_Wiki=5D_Update_of_=22Debug_Symbol_Packages=22_by_stat?= =?utf-8?q?icd-growthecommons?= Message-ID: <20140310144717.6949.94407@mangaba.canonical.com> Dear Wiki user, You have subscribed to a wiki page or wiki category on "Ubuntu Wiki" for change notification. Yes, confirming bugs is not the most important think; but is the most important think that can be done in a Bug Weekend by anyone. In my opinion, the most important part of managing bugs is deciding importances; as this discovers were work is more needed. The next most important task is fixing the bug itself, because is what makes every piece of effort put in a report to seize constantly. Secondly, changing between task can be very distracting. That is why the provided lists has been deeply studied for being predictable, but not repetitive. Moreover, I have formed myself in the latest months specially for doing this. Confirming bugs in the Bug Weekend consist only in following steps in bugs' descriptions. And if there aren't any steps, to ask for them. The concept is like the following: http://youtu.be/hg5RlapdEtE On 10/03/14 14:51, Walter Garcia-Fontes wrote: > 2) On the part of paper cuts, I find that the list was not very > useful. I think is normal people to get angry when something is full of defects that are not being fixed, but the alternative has been till now to use vintage or bad designed malicious bloated proprietary software. Normally people don't get convinced when you try them to be by words, but usually very easily if they can already see themselves results without saying nothing to them; what is, in the end, very wise from them. In this scenario they're the ones who begin to talk about the topic. Although many times it seems, because what they say, that they are not to change; they're rather looking an excuse from you for not taking what already seems better to them. So better to give a brief explanation, without entering in discussion, and let them look and think themselves. And talking about an specific scenario; this is why pilot schemes, which anyone can go and look themselves work, so well in making changes in organizations that are resistant to renovation. What happens is papercuts' fixes, because being minor defects, rarely land in stable release updates; as seen in . So working in something that will never reach a release is just useless. On the other hand, I'm going to include a task for testing if old papercuts are still affecting the future release where they can land. More luckily Ubuntu release circle is going to be shortened, making papercuts' fixes to be delivered continuously in the near future. Regards. Each group uses the status (and other) field(s) for their own use. Depending on the bug and where it is send to, one should use the definitions of the group responsible. In this case the bugs (apparently) belong to a group that use different 'definitions' of the status field, than Bug Squat does. I have seen information on different uses of the bug fields somewhere on wiki.ubuntu.com but I cannot find it anymore..? I suppose this needs to be made more clear on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Bug%20statuses maybe with a list of links to the other groups and their descriptions/use of the fields. While I have taking measures to develop my triaging with zero defect, I just couldn't handle in my mind all the details in such a long and non visual page as it's the bug triage one. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I personally would tend > to look at both New and Triaged bugs when looking to pick up bug fixing > work on the projects I help maintain. Just imitate the One Hundred Papercuts work-flow 's concepts :P * In general: simple over correct, because correction is the child of simplicity. Simplicity makes problems to became obvious rapidly, and to be easy to change. So focus on this, because is what really matters. * Starting by deciding where to start (setting importance), so your work will attach what is more needed first. The 80% of return belongs to only the 20% of developed work, so start there. * Then with the latest step in the bug fixing process, so every piece of work is immediately poured in real improvement, instead of having unfinished work along the hole process. * Making information visually obvious to anyone, because visually is how information is processed more rapidly and in detail by the brain; and you'll want people helping you to be easy for them. * Measured, because processes tend to improve themselves when what's going on becomes obvious. * Parted, so its simple to accomplish one task; instead of having to pay attention to a bunch of things. Anything can be accomplished by dividing it into small goals. * It doesn't need much discussion, because the system is self-explanatory: serve yourself! * And adjusted to what is really required, not what you think it's required. The second can easily be a slant. The result is generally something very small and minimalist that rarely will be noticed as what is: a power tool. As a rule of thumbs, as the tap when you open it for water, if it looks just too simple and easy to accomplish to be real; probably is well designed. Just notice, as result of working like that, we have at this time only 19 confirmed bugs with unknown priority for Trusty from the hundreds we had only three days ago :D (look at the final clean-up ) Philosophical but already powerful. There is NO one-size-fits-all that will work. The security team (as well as the kernel team, and others) have special workflows. One problem we have in launchpad is that there is no concept of workflow, all we have are bugs (as far as we are concerned). Workflow was hammered in bugs, using what launchpad provides. (Also, you have imposed yourself a limit -- "when looking (...) on the projects I help maintain". You do not go and change bugs on projects you DO NOT maintain. You actually may go in, but you will be more careful.) But, back to the issue at hand. The majority of security bugs shown with Alberto's search are *visibly* different from the "normal" bugs we deal with. I expect triagers to be careful on what they do -- if a certain bug looks different from the "common" (whatever it may mean) bug, STOP. Find why it is different. Don't assume that it is all the same. And, of course, we should document these special workflows, at least to allow triagers to identify them. ..C.. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Don't assume that it is all the same. And, if something is different or you have any doubts ask for help either in the #ubuntu-bugs channel on irc or on the ubuntu-bugsquad mailing list. If you don't get an answer in a timely fashion ping me and I'll do my best to respond. -- Brian Murray -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... If developers are not happy, than it's our fault, we can't blame them: they're our customers! We are free to discuss/blame their practices and suggest improvements. However such suggestions must reach the correct people (in this case, if I have understood correctly, the Ubuntu security team). We can't decide for them. But in my opinion, the real problem here is that either Launchpad or the Ubuntu Wiki or the security team fail to communicate that security bugs are special and shouldn't be touched unless you know the correct workflow. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... No, I wasn't talking about Triaging bugs, I was talking about picking up new bugs to work on. > > But, back to the issue at hand. Don't assume that it is all the same. It is the purpose of bug-control to triage bugs in Ubuntu - if there are exceptions to that then they should be documented. It sounds like we're talking about CVE's specifically and I can understand how they'd be a special case. I guess this should be documented somewhere. We shouldn't expect people to guess. > > And, of course, we should document these special workflows, at least to > allow triagers to identify them. > > ..C.. >
