I would recommend that you try one of the many GNOME 2 Ubuntu based 
distros out there such as Mint. It is clear that Ubuntu is moving away 
from GNOME 2 and Oneiric will not even provide the GNOME 2 desktop as an 
option, but there are many distributions that still use it as their main 
interface.
